English Language Centre for Overseas Students (ELCOS)
 

It is possible to take the ELCOS Pre-Sessional course for two months or one month in the summer, immediately before the academic year begins. Lower level students may take other courses in ELCOS which lead into the Pre-Sessional.

The course is open to both undergraduate and graduate overseas students of all academic disciplines. It is full-time and very intensive, with at least 20 weekly contact hours in groups of not more than 12 students.

The main emphases of the course are on English Language and Study Skills. There are taught sessions in :

• academic writing (for essays, reports and examinations)
• reading academic texts (books and journals)
• listening and note-taking
• speaking skills for seminars and presentations
• general language improvement.

In addition students are provided with :

• an introduction to the library and computer facilities (they have full user rights)
• help in making contact with their departments
• individual tutorial support
• orientation to living in Wales and UK
• trips, films, sport and other social events.

For self-study, students can enjoy the use of language laboratories and the ELCOS Self-access room.

ELCOS has been running Pre-Sessional courses since 1985, and has provided thousands of students with a smooth transition into their academic departments in one of the most beautiful environments in the UK. Bangor is easily accessible by road and rail. Trains take approximately 4 hours from London and 3 hours from Manchester.
