English Language Centre

King’s College is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious colleges of the University of London. It possesses a distinguished record of achievements in medicine, law, arts and sciences. Of some 17,000 students currently engaged in study on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, nearly 4,000 are from overseas and represent more than 130 different countries. The College has four Thames-side campuses in central London. The main campus - the Strand campus - directly overlooks the Thames, mid-way between the Houses of Parliament and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Pre-sessional Course in English & Study Skills for Academic Purposes

This full-time course is designed to help students coming to Britain to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at university or college. The course is divided into 3 monthly stages with Stage I beginning in mid-June, Stage II in mid-July and Stage III in August.

Principal aims of the course are to:

• Improve students' expertise in writing and extended writing
• Practise seminar skills and academic discussion
• Improve students' reading abilities
• Provide opportunities to listen to native speakers, lectures, etc and to practise note-taking
• Expand vocabulary, idiomatic and social language skills
• Familiarise students with London, the British way of life and the academic environment.

Content of the course:

• General Language Improvement, Study Skills
• Social English, Pronunciation Work and Speech Improvement
• Lectures, Individual Projects
• Subject-based Academic English Workshops

Students' levels of English will be assessed on arrival and they will be assigned to an appropriate class (maximum size of 15 people). Their work will be monitored throughout the course and they will have weekly tutorial sessions in which to discuss their progress. Students needing to take or retake the IELTS exam can do so during the course.

Accommodation can be provided in a College Hall of Residence for those who need it.

Diploma in English & Academic Studies

A one-year university-validated course designed to prepare students for undergraduate or postgraduate study by focusing on Academic English and academic subject modules, including Business Studies, 20th Century History & International Relations, Law and Psychology.
