Loughborough University

The Pre-sessional courses are for international students who wish to study at Loughborough University or any other British university, but do not have the required level of English language. The aims of these full-time, intensive courses are to raise students’ level of English and equip them with the range of study skills needed to cope with the learning demands of a degree programme, as well as to assist students’ integration into the British social and academic environment.

The courses include :

• delivering effective oral presentations;
• participating in academic seminar discussions and tutorials;
• understanding lectures and taking effective notes;
• planning, structuring, writing and reviewing extended pieces of writing;
• understanding academic writing conventions, such as referencing, and bibliographies;
• summarising and paraphrasing effectively;
• reflecting on academic development and independent learning;
• reading critically, analysing and evaluating academic texts;
• researching and taking effective notes from written sources;
• working independently and collaboratively.

Students attend approximately 21 hours of lessons per week with two qualified and experienced teachers. There are a maximum of 15 students to a class and students have regular one-to-one tutorials with their personal tutor. Student attend guest lectures throughout the course and have access to the University facilities, including :

• Learning Resources Centre (full range of self study materials, graded readers and journals)
• Online resources and materials
• Library
• Computing services (including email and internet)
• Full range of sports facilities
• Students’ Union
• Medical Centre
• Shops, banks, travel agents, cafes, restaurants and bars

Courses start in February, April, July and August and students can stay in full board accommodation in halls on campus. There is a full social programme for all students that includes afternoon and evening activities and trips (eg karaoke, sports, shopping trips to Nottingham), as well as weekend visits to a variety of places (eg London, York, Cambridge, Oxford) organised and accompanied by a team of experienced Social Tutors.

All participants receive a group photograph, an attendance / results letter and a pre-sessional T-shirt at the end of the course.

International Student Advisers are on hand within the department for ongoing support with visas and police registrations, opening bank accounts, as well as offering help and advice on many different aspects of living or studying at Loughborough University.
