International Centre for English Language Studies (ICELS)

The International Centre for English Language Studies (ICELS) offers short and year round English language courses that prepare international students to succeed in their academic and professional futures.

The University Pre-sessional course is designed for overseas students to raise their English language level and academic skills for undergraduate and postgraduate study at Oxford Brookes University or any UK university. The course helps students :

• to improve their use of English in an academic context
• to develop their study skills and experience a wide range of academic tasks before starting university
• to become familiar with British University life

The course focuses on the following :

• Academic reading strategies and critical reading skills
• Writing academic essays, reports and dissertations
• Listening to authentic lectures
• Giving academic presentations
• Participating in group discussions and communicating with university tutors

Students undertake a research project and complete an academic paper. A Language Report and a certificate of attendance from Oxford Brookes University are provided for all students who complete the University Pre-sessional course.

The course runs for 4 to 12 weeks over the summer so it can be taken immediately before the students enter their undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

Students will also enjoy an exciting social programme of trips and events to help them practice the language socially and expand their familiarity with British society and culture.

Students benefit from being able to enjoy all university facilities, including free access to email and Internet on the networked computers, the library and the sports centre.

ICELS is situated on the main university campus, about 10 minutes from the city centre of Oxford, a beautiful city famous for its academic reputation.
