English Language Centre

Pre-sessional Courses in English for Academic Purposes and Study Skills

These are designed to prepare international students for study at the University of Bath or any other British higher education institution.

There are 20 hours of tuition a week. Students are in small classes (maximum 12 students), but also see tutors regularly for individual tuition.

Course content includes:

• Understanding lectures
• Essay and report writing
• Giving presentations
• Vocabulary development
• Seminar practice
• Small research project
• Conversational English
• Using the University Library
• Reading skills
• Short computer course
• Notetaking skills

Students stay on campus in self-catering accommodation, where experienced student helpers advise and help on a range of matters. They also run a social/cultural programme, which includes visits to places of interest around Bath, and many evening activities.

About the University of Bath

The University campus is surrounded by beautiful countryside close to the city centre. Facilities include banks, shops and bars as well as a 24 hour Library and Sports Village. Bath is the only city in Britain to be designated a United Nations World Heritage City. It is one of the most beautiful places in Europe, with its attractive Georgian buildings, Roman baths, museums, galleries and excellent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. It is also close to many places of interest, such as Stonehenge and Oxford.

In-sessional English Programme

Students continuing their studies at Bath can follow our free In-sessional Programmes, including Academic Writing, Spoken English, Business English and Cambridge Examinations. These courses are accredited by the University.
