INTO University of Exeter, a partnership between the University of Exeter and INTO University Partnerships Ltd, was set up in 2006 to expand the provision of preparatory courses in English language and subject fields for international students seeking entry to the University of Exeter and other UK universities. There are currently (March 2010) 800+ students on full-time INTO Exeter programmes.
In December 2008 the University had a student population 15,525, including 1,995 international students representing 120 countries. This figure is rising rapidly – currently the international student population is estimated at 2,700 students. 850 Exeter University international students register annually on the INTO insessional programme.
The INTO Centre occupies a central site on the University campus. The campus is among the most attractive in Britain, and is only 15 minutes walk from the city centre. Exeter's history dates back to Roman times, and today has a population of 123,500 (June, 2008). Devon and Cornwall are among Europe's top tourist destinations and have a milder climate all the year round than many other areas of Britain.
English for undergraduate studies & English for postgraduate studies
These courses are designed for students who wish to improve their ability in English and study skills before they start courses or research in their own subjects at university or college in Britain. They are also suitable for students who wish to study academic English, even if they do not intend to study in Britain immediately.
There are approximately 20 hours of tuition per week and the following areas of study are included :
At higher levels, presentation skills are covered and students do an
individual study project in which they practise all academic skills.
There is also an extensive guided Independent learning programme which
is discussed with a study tutor on a weekly basis.
Pre-Sessional EAP courses run from July - September. Depending on
their language entry level, students are required to take either a 5- or
10-week course. Provided academic entry requirements are met, successful
completion of Pre-Sessional English ensures entry to degree courses at
Exeter University without the need for a corroborating test result (eg
an IELTS score).
Students wishing to take longer EAP courses can join English programmes
for undergraduate and postgraduate entry which have start dates in
September, January, April and July.
Insessional provision
The Insessional Programme offers a year-round range of courses,
workshops and tutorials to University of Exeter students who are
speakers of other languages. It enables students to develop their
academic English and provides help and support for studying through the
medium of English. Credit-rated insessional modules are an option for
Exchange students and some Exeter undergraduates. The Insessional
programme is funded by the University - there is no charge to students.
University qualifications
The Centre offers several qualifications which prepare students for
undergraduate and postgraduate degrees : a Foundation Certificate
(pathways in Science, Humanities, Business and Engineering), a Diploma
in Business Management, Accounting and Economics (leading to the award
of Certificate of Higher Education), and a Graduate Diploma (pathways in
Management, Finance, Law and Public Administration). These programmes
enable students to develop both their subject knowledge and English
language skills, and provide entry to the University’s five Colleges
(Humanities; Social Sciences; Life and Environmental Sciences; Business;
Engineering, Maths and Physical Sciences). The INTO centre also runs a
Study Abroad programme.
Facilities
INTO students have full University of Exeter student membership. In
Centre they have access to computer and audio/visual facilities; they
also have access to the University library, sports facilities, swimming
pool and societies. INTO offers a full social programme, including
regular excursions, sports nights, theatre visits and international food
evenings. During the academic year full-time INTO students have personal
tutors, and are given help with UCAS applications.
